  • When people gather at the 9/11 Memorial and gaze upon the 152 brass plates outlining square memorial pools built in the footprints of Twin Towers, they will see that those plates bear the names of the nearly 3,000 victims of Sept. 11, 2001, and Feb. 26, 1993, the date of the first terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.

First stage production included creating these brass plates, which outline the square memorial pools built in the footprints of the Twin Towers.

  • Then the names were cut out, or incised, using water jet machining. The high pressure water cutting machine sprays a stream of water, mixed with the kind of grit used in sandpaper, at a force of 55,000 pounds per square inch, through a nozzle measuring one-hundredth of an inch in diameter. In addition to inscribing the individual names for the Memorial Plaques, Precision Shape Solutions also uses waterjet cutting to make metal parts for nearly anything.

  • In all, 2,982 names were cut through half-inch thick brass using the waterjet cutting services at Precision Shape Solutions. “It was very emotional at times,” said Jim Moretti, co-owner of Precision Shape Solutions, explaining, “We had a lot of victims’ family members visit us while we were doing the work.”

Partaking in the construction of sacred memorials was nothing new to Moretti’s company. Precision Shape Solutions had also utilized water jet machining to build the base for the Morris County 9/11 Memorial in Parsippany, NJ.
